Teen charged over SA schoolyard stabbing

A teenage girl has been charged over the stabbing of a fellow student at a school in Adelaide's north.

A 16-year-old schoolgirl has been charged with stabbing another student during a fight at an Adelaide college.

A 15-year-old Trinity College North student was taken to hospital with minor wrist and leg injuries after the alleged attack at the Evanston South school on Thursday morning.

The other teen, from Blakeview, has been charged with aggravated assault causing harm.

School principal Nick Hately said an altercation between the two year 10 girls led to the alleged stabbing.

"Acts of violence are incredibly rare so this incident is very confronting for our community," he said in a letter to parents.

"Families of those involved and witnesses have been contacted by the school."

Mr Hately also said students were being offered counselling.

South Australian Premier Jay Weatherill said his government had zero tolerance for violence in schools.

"It is utterly inconsistent with the values that we teach and, when it occurs, it's first the subject of disciplinary action in the context of the school ... and will be referred to the police if it amounts to a criminal offence," he said.

"It is important that this be seen for precisely what it is; it's criminal conduct to physically assault another person."

The 16-year-old is expected to face the Elizabeth Youth Court on October 13.
