Police have revealed details of a car involved in a hit-and-run, as a 13-year-old girl fights for life in a Melbourne hospital.

The teen's family is keeping a bedside vigil at the Royal Children's Hospital after a BMW struck the teen on her bicycle on the corner of Bell and Sussex streets at Coburg on Sunday night.

The driver pulled over but then drove off again, police said.

The car has been described as a dark grey BMW E87 1 Series and may have damage to the passenger side, front windscreen, front bumper, external mirror and headlights, investigators say.

"What sort of person hits a young girl and then doesn't render assistance?" Victoria Police Assistant Commissioner Doug Fryer told reporters on Monday.

"There is absolutely no doubt that the person who hit this young girl ... was fully aware that they just hit a 13-year-old girl on a bike.

"It's only a matter of time until we figure out who it is and we'd far prefer that person to hand themselves in rather than us dragging them out of bed when we find out who they are."

Police earlier said they believed a woman got out of the BMW after the accident but weren't sure whether she was the driver.

Five people were killed in a horror weekend on Victoria's country roads, including a 19-year-old man in a ute rollover near Euroa, and a 72-year-old man and his 70-year-old female passenger in a collision with a ute at Newry.
