A 15-year-old rugby league player has died after he collapsed during a match in Gundagai, New South Wales.
The ABC reported Lui Polimeni, who was from Jugiong, was playing for the under 16s Gundagai Tigers against Tumut on Sunday when he collapsed.
The match was abandoned and Lui had been in an induced coma since following an operation to relieve pressure on his brain.
His family made the decision on Wednesday to turn off his life support and he died surrounded by his family, friends and member of the Gundagai Tigers Rugby League Club.
In a statement on the team's Facebook page, his family said: "Lui loved his footy. Lui loved the Tigers. Lui loved his mates and his team mates. Lui gave his best every time he played".
"After deep consideration Lui's life support system will be switched off today after he suffered massive stroke symptoms," the statement read.
"He fought a great battle but was not able to recover."
Counselling is being offered to Lui's friends at Murrumburrah High School.
