Teenage boy dies after police called to NSW pool

A teenage boy has died at a public pool in Newcastle after police arrived to investigate an alleged assault on an employee.

The tragedy unfolded on Tuesday afternoon at Lambton Pool when the 17-year-old allegedly assaulted an employee and had to be restrained by witnesses until police arrived.

Newcastle City Council, which owns the pool complex that is leased by Lane 4 Aquatics, released a statement on Wednesday.

"Late yesterday a 17-year-old boy and his carer were visiting the Lambton Pool. The boy began causing harm to himself and surrounding property. His carer, with the assistance from passersby, restrained the boy to prevent him doing further harm to himself.

"During the incident, the boy had a medical episode and subsequently required CPR. Emergency services attended the scene however he was unable to be resuscitated.

"NSW Police are investigating and we are providing assistance to the Lane 4 Aquatic staff involved in the incident.

"We express our deepest sympathy to the family," the statement read. The teenager was taken to John Hunter Hospital, where he died. NSW police have not commented on the nature of the teen's injuries but say a critical incident investigation has been launched and it will be subject to an independent review.

Witnesses are being urged to come forward.

The Lambton Pool website said on Wednesday the facility would be closed until further notice due to "unforeseen circumstances" but it's expected to reopen later in the day, a pool spokeswoman told AAP.
