A man has been charged with dangerous driving causing death after his car hit and killed a 17-year-old girl who was on her way to school north of Newcastle.
Emergency services raced to Brandy Hill, a suburb in the Port Stephens area, about 7.30am on Monday to treat the girl but she died at the scene, police said.
The 42-year-old driver was taken for mandatory testing and subsequently charged with dangerous driving causing death and negligent driving causing death.
The man's passengers, two girls aged 17 and 12 and a 10-year-old boy, were uninjured in the crash.
His licence has been suspended and he is due to face Raymond Terrace Local Court on March 27.
Videos posted to social media on Monday afternoon show friends and family laying flowers at a makeshift roadside memorial for the teen.
Meanwhile, a woman has died in a single-vehicle car crash in northern NSW.
Emergency services were called to Summerland Way near Whiporie about 12.30pm on Monday.
The female driver, believed to aged in her 20s, died at the scene. She was the only occupant.
Police have established a crime scene and have called for any witnesses to come forward.
Her death comes after a 62-year-old grandmother died on the NSW south coast on Sunday when she was dragged down a hill after being caught between a motorhome and another vehicle it was towing.
