A teenage gunman who caused chaos in Melbourne when he was spotted at the MCG precinct with a shotgun during a two-day crime spree has been jailed for seven years.

David Paul Rowntree, 20, stole cars and was involved in high-speed police chases before he was cornered by police in a Whittlesea paddock last June.

Rowntree triggered a shutdown of Melbourne's sporting precinct when he dumped a double-barrelled shotgun at a tram stop near Rod Laver Arena, while fleeing police.

During the two-day rampage he was clocked travelling at 197km/h on the Princes Freeway towards Geelong and 130km/h on the Hume Highway towards Whittlesea.

Rowntree, who was on parole at the time, pleaded guilty to 13 charges including firearm offences, theft, aggravated burglaries, armed robbery endangering people and conduct endangering life.
