Temperature drop to help NSW firies

A southerly change has pushed a fire 1km from a small township on the NSW south coast but a temperature drop is helping to bring it under control.

A fire is burning out of control one kilometre from the small town of Currarong on the NSW south coast but a temperature drop is aiding fire fighters.

A fire burning on the Beecroft Peninsula remains a "watch and act" fire after winds blew the blaze one kilometre away from Currarong, near Jervis Bay, with the town's 500 residents being told to be prepared for embers and smoke.

Retardant lines have been dropped by both Southern Belle and Thor, the state's two DC-10 waterbombers, in an attempt to stop the fire from reaching the township.

"The main concern is the winds will actually push the fire towards the township," a NSW Rural Fire Service spokeswoman told AAP.

The southerly change was due into Sydney around 5pm on Thursday and is expected to bring more favourable conditions for firefighters, she said.

"As that moves through the state... it will be very helpful," she said.

Close to 30 blazes are burning out of control in NSW, as nearly 400 firefighters work to contain and monitor bush and grass fires burning across the state.

RFS has listed all other fires as of "no immediate danger".

A fire near Maitland in the Hunter Valley is still burning out of control and earlier prompted a local preschool to be evacuated but there is no direct threat to properties, an RFS spokeswoman said on Thursday.

Temperatures climbed towards 40C in parts of the state, reaching 37C in Sydney and Penrith and a severe fire danger remains for the greater Sydney and Hunter regions.
