Ten claims against Vic AWU: report

The first annual report of the Registered Organisations Commission shows it is examining 10 claims against the Australian Workers Union.

The unions watchdog is investigating 10 claims against the Victorian branch of the Australian Workers Union stemming from the Heydon royal commission.

The Registered Organisations Commission's first annual report since it was set up in May this year confirmed the 10 referrals related to section 331 of the Registered Organisations Act which "enables the commissioner ... to conduct an investigation if there are reasonable grounds to believe financial obligations or civil penalty provisions have been contravened".

"The 10 referrals were accompanied by more than 23,000 pages of supporting materials across a broad range of potential contraventions, including failing to maintain proper records. The ROC is continuing this investigation," the report said.

A 12-month investigation into whether the union had maintained "proper records" was expected to be completed by November 30.

The sections involved in that investigation included obligations to keep a register of members and for financial reports to "give a true and fair view of the financial position and performance" of the union.

Labor has accused the government of using the ROC for political reasons, given leader Bill Shorten's former role as Victorian and national secretary of the AWU.

The report also showed an investigation was under way into the CEPU electrical, energy and services division Victorian and Tasmanian branches over "alleged inappropriate use of funds".
