Ten Network continues to gain market share from its rivals, though still remains a distant third in the commercial TV market.

TV advertising revenue also continues to decline, particularly in regional areas.

Ten attracted 23.2 per cent of capital city TV ad revenue in the second half of 2015, up from its market share of 21.9 per cent from January to June, according to figures from Free TV Australia.

It is the strongest market share held by Ten since June 2012, the network said.

Seven's market share slipped in the six months to December but it remains the market leader with a 38.5 per cent share, just ahead of Nine's 38.2 per cent.

"Our revenue performance in the December 2015 half reflects the strong audience and revenue growth and momentum Ten achieved last year," Ten chief executive Paul Anderson said.

He said the network's recently acquired Foxtel advertising agency Multi-Channel Network was delivering strong results.

The recent ratings success of its Big Bash cricket coverage, and upcoming return of sci-fi drama The X-Files, will continue Ten's momentum, Mr Anderson added.

Ten shares closed down 5.5 cents, or 4.21 per cent, at $1.25.

Free TV's figures show overall metropolitan TV ad revenue dropped 0.36 per cent from a year ago to $1.55 billion, while regional ad revenue slumped 6.6 per cent to $423 million.
