Terrorism needs collective action: Bishop

Foreign Minister Julie Bishop has told an influential think-tank in Washington that Islamic State represents the most overt threat to global order.

Foreign Minister Julie Bishop says Islamic State is the most overt threat to global order, and that Australia and the United States stand together in the fight against terrorism.

Ms Bishop has told one of the world's leading think tanks on security and international affairs that international partners including the US must be determined in the fight against violent extremism and terrorism.

There must be international resolve "to defend the weak, preserving the global order's ability to respond to threats through collective action", Ms Bishop said on Thursday in a speech at the Washington-based Centre for Strategic and International Studies.

"Terrorism is one of the forces that sap power from states - the most overt threat is currently Daesh," Ms Bishop said.

"It completely rejects the current global order and all of its tenets - even the nation-state itself - having effectively erased the border between Syria and Iraq - in favour of its proclaimed Caliphate that respects no boundaries, no sovereignty."

Ms Bishop later said Australia and the US were committed allies in the fight against terror groups such as Islamic State, otherwise known as ISIL or Daesh.

"Australia and the United States stand together in the face of the threat posed by Daesh and other terrorist organisations, and we together will seek to combat violent extremism and terrorism wherever and whenever it exists." she said.
