Incumbent wicketkeeper Peter Nevill admits his early season form hasn't been great as he strives to shore up his spot for a potential first Test on home soil.

The 30-year-old NSW gloveman played his first four Tests in England during the recent Ashes series.

Nevill scored 143 runs at 23.83 with one fifty in his six innings.

The first Test of the summer against New Zealand in Perth starts in just over two weeks, on November 5.

Aspirants for that game have the last few domestic one-day competition games, some tour matches against New Zealand and a pink ball day-night opening round of Sheffield Shield cricket to push their claims.

Nevill has had precious few opportunities to make big early season scores in a dominant NSW team.

He has scored just 28 runs from four innings at an average of 9.33.

"It (my form) hasn't been fantastic by no means," Nevill said.

"I haven't had a lot to do in the early games which has been a very good problem for us to have.

"But I was pleased with the way I kept in the most recent game."

Asked what it would mean to finally play a Test at home Nevill said "I imagine it would be a wonderful experience, so I'm hopeful I get selected and can do that."

Tasmania's Tim Payne (260 runs at 52) and Victoria's Matthew Wade (149 at 37.25) have been the most productive early season batsmen among the nation's wicketkeepers.

Nevill stressed New Zealand would be strong opposition in the three-match series in Brisbane, Perth and Adelaide.

THe sixth ranked Black Caps have not lost any of their last seven Test series stretching back two years.

"It will be a big challenge," Nevill said.

"They have done exceptionally well over the past few years and they play an exciting brand of cricket, so it should be a very entertaining series."
