Test stars named in Shield squads

Steve Smith and David Warner will lead a star-studded NSW XI in the opening round of the Sheffield Shield.

David Warner will take part in the opening round of the Sheffield Shield as the Australia opener seeks to prove his fitness for the first Test against New Zealand.

Warner hasn't played a cricket match since his thumb was broken on September 5, when England paceman Steven Finn inflicted a painful blow in an ODI at Lord's.

The national vice-captain started batting in the nets recently and on Monday was named in a star-studded NSW squad that will face South Australia this week.

The day-night clash - when the controversial pink ball will be used - begins at Adelaide Oval on Wednesday.

Steve Smith, who continues to manage a knee issue, will captain the Blues.

Test keeper Peter Nevill will be keen to make a score of substance against SA after a dry run in the domestic one-day tournament.

Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood and Nathan Lyon will form part of an impressive NSW attack, having led the side to one-day glory in Sunday's final.

Meanwhile, express paceman Mitchell Johnson will make a rare first-class appearance for Western Australia at Bellerive.

Johnson hasn't played a Shield game for WA since November 2013, the game that preceded his all-conquering Ashes campaign.

Also facing Tasmania will be Adam Voges, Cameron Bancroft, Mitch and Shaun Marsh - all in the mix for the Gabba Test that starts on November 5.

Victoria are up against Queensland at the MCG in the other Shield fixture, with the hosts to name their side on Tuesday.

The Bulls will be led by another Test aspirant Usman Khawaja, who scored an unbeaten 111 in last weekend's tour game against New Zealand.

Joe Burns, another Queensland batsman capable of opening alongside David Warner, has also been picked for James Hopes' 100th first-class match.

NSW 12-man squad: Ed Cowan, David Warner, Nic Maddinson, Steve Smith (capt), Moises Henriques, Peter Nevill, Sean Abbott, Stephen O'Keefe, Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood, Nathan Lyon, Doug Bollinger.

WA 13-man squad: Cameron Bancroft, Marcus Harris, Michael Klinger, Adam Voges (capt), Shaun Marsh, Mitch Marsh, Sam Whiteman, Ashton Agar, Mitchell Johnson, Jason Behrendorff, Michael Hogan, Joel Paris, Simon Mackin.

QLD 12-man squad: Joe Burns, Marnus Labuschagne, Usman Khawaja, Scott Henry, Nathan Reardon, James Hopes, Chris Hartley, Ben Cutting, Cameron Boyce, Peter George, Mark Steketee, Jack Wildermuth.
