Test stars to skip Aussies' T20 series

Australia have named a 13-man Twenty20 squad, with several Test stars overlooked so they can focus on their red-ball form.

Star pacemen Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood and Pat Cummins have been left out of Australia's Twenty20 squad, with returning left-armer Jason Behrendorff given a chance to shine in their absence.

Aaron Finch's side face South Africa in a one-off T20 on November 17 before hosting India in a three-match T20 series.

Starc, Hazlewood and Cummins will skip all four games, ensuring they can work on their red-ball bowling ahead of Australia's four-Test series against India that starts on December 6.

Of Australia's Test XI that faced Pakistan last month, Finch is the only player taking part in the upcoming T20s.

Coach Justin Langer confirmed Starc, Nathan Lyon, Peter Siddle and Mitch Marsh had been overlooked so they can focus on the Sheffield Shield.

"We know coming off the back of the tour to the UAE, a huge summer at home, and the World Cup and Ashes just around the corner that we have to get the balance right between playing our best T20 team and preparing for the upcoming Test series," Langer said.

"While I know all four have a desire to be playing cricket for Australia in every format, with a really tough Test series against India coming up, we believe their best preparation is to go back and get some really good cricket under their belts in the Sheffield Shield."

Behrendorff, who's suffered recurring back injuries and recently returned from 10 months on the sidelines, proved his fitness and form by snagging the prized scalps of Quinton de Kock and Faf du Plessis during the Prime Minister's XI game on October 31.

Selectors hope the 28-year-old, who generates impressive bounce and swing, will be able to fill the immense void left by Starc.

Behrendorff, who hasn't played a first-class game since November 2017, is still building up his workloads but coach Justin Langer is satisfied he is ready to step up.

"It was exciting to see him bowl well in the JLT Cup and in the recent Prime Minister's XI match," Langer said.

"It gave us more evidence of how devastating he can be with the new ball.

"Tactically we believe it's important to have a good left-arm swing bowler at our disposal for the four matches."

Behrendorff is one of four Perth Scorchers in the squad.

Former Perth mentor Langer also coached Ashton Agar, Nathan Coulter-Nile and Andrew Tye in the Big Bash League.

T20 squad: Aaron Finch (capt), Alex Carey, Ashton Agar, Jason Behrendorff, Nathan Coulter-Nile, Chris Lynn, Glenn Maxwell, Ben McDermott, D'Arcy Short, Billy Stanlake, Marcus Stoinis, Andrew Tye, Adam Zampa.
