Brisbane star Tevita Pangai Jnr faces two games on the sidelines after being charged by the NRL's match review committee for an ugly late hit on Cooper Cronk.

The Brisbane forward was on Friday hit with a grade two dangerous contact charge, for the hit that was labelled a "dog shot" by rugby league Immortal Andrew Johns.

Pangai Jnr took Cronk out of the play in the Sydney Roosters' 36-4 flogging of Brisbane, well after the Tricolours halfback had passed the ball.

He'll miss matches against Wests Tigers and Canberra, while the ban will extend to a third week if he fights the charge and loses.

The 23-year-old avoided being sin-binned for the hit, but was instead placed on report as he copped widespread criticism over the knock.

"It's a dog shot, an absolute cheap shot. It's so dangerous, someone is going to get really seriously injured," Johns said on the Nine Network commentary.

Late shots became a point of contention in the NRL last season after retiring champion Johnathan Thurston grew tired of becoming a target for opposition forwards.

Johns and NSW State of Origin coach Brad Fittler have also been critics.

Cronk was taken from the field in the second half on Thursday night with a back injury, but the blow was not believed to be related to the hit from Pangai Jnr.

The ban comes as another cruel blow to the Brisbane pack, who only welcomed fellow middle player Matt Lodge from a two-week suspension on Thursday night.

Fellow young forward Payne Haas is also due back from a club imposed four-week ban against Wests Tigers on Thursday night, after being suspended for failing to cooperate with the integrity unit.
