The death toll from a ferry accident in Thailand has risen to 27 after a three-year-old boy was found dead in the river.

The death toll from a ferry accident in central Thailand has risen to 27 after a three-year-old boy was found dead in the river, officials say.

Marine police were Tuesday salvaging the wreck and hoping to find the remaining two missing people.

The accident took place on Sunday when the crowded passenger boat carrying more than 100 people collided with a concrete pillar in the Chao Phraya river in Ayutthaya province, 67km north of Bangkok.

An estimated 40 people were injured.

The passengers were reportedly Muslim pilgrims travelling home to the province of Nonthaburi after observing an annual Islamic ceremony in the ancient city of Ayutthaya.

Thai authorities have reportedly compensated the families of the victims, paying 5,000 baht ($A189.82) for each death and 2,000 baht for each injured passenger.

The boat captain has been charged with reckless driving resulting in death.
