Texas police decided to lift the festive spirits of unsuspecting motorists and give out Thanksgiving turkeys to drivers who were being pulled over for a traffic violation.

In a video posted to the Laredo Police Department's Youtube account, officers in southern Texas stopped motorists for actual traffic infringements.

But disappointment turns into joy when motorists discover they were getting a turkey and a written warning instead of a fine.
Some passengers hugged the officers and even starting crying.

"The reactions were varied in the sense that the unsuspecting citizens could not believe they were getting turkeys instead of citations," the Laredo Police Department wrote on YouTube.

"Many of the citizens wept and thanked the officers for their turkeys."

Chief Claudio Treviño said he was proud to be part of the police initiative.

"The officers came up with the idea and that commitment to the betterment and service to our community is what makes me proudest to be the head of such a dedicated and compassionate group of officers," he said.

The 25 turkeys were donated by a local business who humbly asked not to be identified.
