The Australian invention saving lives in Afghanistan

It's an invention credited with saving lives on the battlefield in Afghanistan and the man leading the team that developed it is has been honoured with a prestigious science award.

The invention jams the signals used to set off improvised explosive devices or IEDs.

A team led by Darryn Smart at Defence Science and Technology developed it under what's called the Redwing project.

The Australian Academy of Technology and Engineering has recognising their efforts with a Clunies Ross science award.

Darryn Smart told Greg Dyett the invention has saved lives and proved to be an export success story.
