Sydney’s late-night lockout laws became effective in February 2014 in the Kings Cross and central Sydney Entertainment Precincts.
Under the laws, entry to pubs and clubs is denied after 1.30am, and last drinks are at 3am. Across the state takeaway alcohol sales after 10pm are banned.
Last year the then-state government lead by Barry O’Farrell introduced the changes after the violent death of Daniel Christie in Kings Cross on New Year’s Eve, 2013. The previous year, an assault in Kings Cross killed Thomas Kelly.
These charts show the number of non-domestic violence related assaults recorded by police for the Greater Sydney area compared to the Sydney City and Kings Cross Local Area Commands.
The Sydney City and Kings Cross figures allude to the effectiveness of the lock out zones, and the Greater Sydney figures show the general trends in the Sydney area.
