The Gonski 2.0 vision to shake-up schools

The Gonski 2.0 report recommends Australia's school curriculum be overhauled over five years to shift the focus to individual student achievements.

DAVID GONSKI'S VISION TO REFORM AUSTRALIA'S SCHOOLS

* Change the curriculum to set out learning progressions in each subject.

* Make sure each student gets a year's worth of learning for every year they're at school.

* Review the years 11 and 12 curricula to ensure students have the skills they need for the future.

* Create an online tool for teachers to regularly assess where each student is at and how they are progressing.

* Teachers should prioritise basic literacy and numeracy in the early years.

* Give students a special student number to track their growth.

* Allow students to have a voice and to provide feedback about their own education.

WHAT THEY'RE SAYING

"A quality education is the bedrock for success throughout life. We can and must do more. We now have the blueprint to do it" - Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull.

"The devil is always in the detail, it will be the details of what the Turnbull Government intends to do with the review's recommendations" - Australian Education Union president Correna Haythorpe.

WHAT HAPPENS NEXT

* The government accepts all 23 recommendations in principle.

* Mr Gonski will brief state and territory education ministers at a special COAG meeting on Friday.

* The government will work with states and territories and non-government school systems to work out how the reforms should be delivered.

* A new reform agreement between the Commonwealth and states will be negotiated this year to come into effect from 2019.
