The lawyer who stole Clooney's heart

Amal Alamuddin has taken Hollywood's most eligible bachelor off the market, but who exactly is the glamorous human rights lawyer?

She's acted for Wikileaks founder Julian Assange, has advised UN envoy to Syria Kofi Annan and was followed on Twitter by Julia Gillard.

And now Amal Alamuddin has snaffled Hollywood's most eligible barrister.

Unlike George Clooney's other former flames, Alamuddin isn't an actress, model, cocktail waitresses or former professional wrestler.

But by all indications she's smart, beautiful - and lucky.

The couple have kept their relationship discrete since they were first spotted together in London last October.

Rumours that Clooney, 52, popped the question to the 36-year-old Lebanese-born British lawyer have now been confirmed by practically everyone except the two-time Oscar-winner himself.

His mother Nina Clooney has given her soon-to-be daughter-in-law the thumbs up, while his father Nick Clooney said he's "very pleased" for the pair.

But here's what we know about Amal Alamuddin:

SHE'S A HIGH-FLYING BARRISTER

Alamuddin works with expat Aussie barrister Geoffrey Robertson at Doughty Street Chambers, where she specialises in international law, human rights, extradition and criminal law.

She recently worked on the legal team defending maverick Australian Wikileaks founder Julian Assange while he was fighting extradition to Sweden.

She's also worked with jailed former Ukrainian prime minister Yulia Tymoshenko.

According to her profile on the firm's website, she is currently Counsel to the Inquiry into the use of drones in counter terrorism operations.

THEY MET THROUGH WORK

Alamuddin is believed to have come to Clooney's attention through her role as adviser to Kofi Annan, the United Nations envoy to Syria.

The actor has himself long championed human rights causes, in particular the plight of refugees in the Sudanese region of Darfur.

SHE'S GOT THE SMARTS

She studied law at Oxford University, and also graduated from the New York University School of Law. Apart from being adept at speaking French, the 36-year-old is also fluent in Arabic, English, and French, having being born in Beirut.

SHE WRITES

In addition to working as a barrister, Alamuddin co-edited the book The Special Tribunal for Lebanon: Law and Practice, examining the first international court created in response to a terrorist act - the 2005 assassination of Rafic Hariri.

She also co-authored an article in the Journal of International Criminal Justice in which she examined the expansion of the International Criminal Court's jurisdiction over the use of prohibited weapons in international armed conflicts.

SHE TRAVELS

Along with spending time in the US, Alamuddin has also reportedly travelled widely. In March, Clooney took her to Tanzania where the couple were snapped marvelling at local wildlife. They later visited the Seychelles together.

SHE DOESN'T DO TWITTER

Alamuddin recently deactivated her Twitter account. Before deleting her profile, she'd reportedly accumulated nearly 1800 followers including Ashton Kutcher and former prime minister Julia Gillard.

It means she's now on the same page on social media as Clooney, who told Esquire magazine last year that any famous person who has a profile on Twitter is a "moron".

SHE'S HOT

That's obvious just by looking at her. But it's actually official. At least according to Tumblr user Your Barrister Boyfriend, who rated her top of a list of the 21 Hottest Barristers in London.

"Amal Alamuddin may make some feel inadequate because she has achieved the seemingly unattainable ideal of contemporary femininity," the blog says. "She is both breathtakingly beautiful and formidably successful," the blog says.

HER MUM HAS INTERVIEWED THATCHER

Baria Alamuddin is an award-winning journalist who's interviewed prominent heads of state, from Margaret Thatcher to Hosni Mubarak, Tony Blair, Bill Clinton and Fidel Castro.

She's currently foreign editor of Lebanese newspaper Al Hayat and makes regular appearances as a Middle Eastern correspondent on CNN, BBC, Sky News, Al-Jazeera.

It's strikes a coincidental parallel with Clooney's father Nick who's a high-profile US journalist, anchorman and TV host.

SHE'S PROVEN CLOONEY WRONG

As recently as last December Clooney said he had no plans to walk down the aisle again after being married for four years to actress Talia Balsam two decades ago.

"I haven't had aspirations in that way, ever. I was married in 1989. I wasn't very good at it," he told Esquire.

Doesn't seem that way anymore, given Alamuddin was spotted last week sporting a big sparkler on her engagement finger during a meal with model Cindy Crawford and actor Ed Norton at a Malibu restaurant.

SHE'S A FORMER PROFESSIONAL WRESTLER. NOT.

That will be Clooney's most recent girlfriend, Stacey Kiebler.
