Some of the world's best athletes have injured themselves in the most unlikely of circumstances over the years.

SWIMMING

- Australia's Cate Campbell injures her wrist ahead of Rio Olympic trials in Adelaide by sleeping on it awkwardly

- Australian butterflyer Petria Thomas misses the 2003 world titles after suffering a shoulder injury while reaching to turn off an alarm clock

RUGBY LEAGUE

- NSW forward Robbie Kearns breaks his collarbone falling during a 1999 horse riding Origin bonding exercise

- Manly utility David Liddiard misses a match in the 1990s after pulling a back muscle while cleaning his teeth

- Balmain's Tim Brasher misses the 2001 season after injuring his knee falling down while cleaning a ceiling fan

CRICKET

- NSW 12th man Trent Copeland rolls his ankle carrying the drinks

- Glenn McGrath (ankle) misses the 2005 Edgbaston second Test after stepping on a cricket ball while playing touch football in the warm-up

- Australian 'keeper Brad Haddin injures eye in a post-wicket high-five gone awry in a 2013 one-dayer

V8 SUPERCARS

- James Courtney has 2016 V8 championship hopes dashed when sidelined after suffering serious chest injuries when struck by debris blown by a low-flying Navy helicopter before a race in August 2015

SOCCER

- Central Coast's Storm Roux breaks his leg, damages his ankle and dislocates his shoulder after spinning quickly to try and block an A-League rival's shot on goal in February

- Spain 'keeper Santiago Canizares forced out of 2002 World Cup after dropping a bottle of aftershave on his foot, severing a tendon

- In 1975, former Manchester United footballer Alex Stepney dislocates his jaw while yelling at his defenders

AFL

- Geelong's Brad Ottens impales himself on a garden stake slipping while putting up a backyard hammock

- West Coast's Sharrod Wellingham misses games in 2013 after landing awkwardly on a trampoline

- Josh Kennedy is hospitalised in 2011 with an eye injury after being hit in the eye by a tennis ball thrown by Eagles teammate Dean Cox in the changerooms

GOLF

- Australia's Brett Ogle is out for six months after shattering his knee cap when his own shot ricochets off a tree and hits his leg in 1991 Australian Open

- Champion golfer Jack Newton loses an arm and eye after walking into a propeller at Sydney airport in 1983

BASEBALL

- In 1992 Atlanta Braves' Tom Glavine breaks two ribs while throwing up airline food

- In 2002 Kansas City Royals' Brent Mayne suffers back spasms while turning to check traffic before crossing the street

- In 1990 Toronto's Glenallen Hill suffers deep cuts after falling through a glass table while having a nightmare about spiders

AMERICAN FOOTBALL

- In 1999 Cleveland's Orlando Brown suffers partial blindness when struck in the eye by a referee's flag

- In 2003 Jacksonville punter Chris Hanson suffers a horror leg gash swinging an axe in the locker room

- In 2001 Arizona's Bill Gramatica suffers season-ending knee injury after leaping to fist bump teammate celebrating a field goal

BASKETBALL

- In 1999 the great Michael Jordan misses an NBA game after slicing his finger with a cigar cutter

ICE HOCKEY

- In 2000 Toronto's Glenn Healy needs 40 stitches after his bagpipes explode while cleaning them
