It has been almost 20 years since the Powerpuff Girls first graced our screens with their unique blend of sugar, spice and everything nice - and now they're back!

It seems the 2014 TV special with Ringo Starr - yes, that happened - was just the beginning with the animated superheroines set to return to the small screen this year.

Cartoon Network have released the first glimpse of the girls back in action and in an ever-topical plot twist they appear to be fighting men's rights activitists (MRAs).

As if we could love them more *sniff*.

It's the feisty Buttercup that trades blows with the bearded baddie, who taunts her with phrases like "princess" and "little girl" until she punches him into the proverbial future.

Atta girl.

After the rebooted animation style that utilised CGI in the TV special, it appears they've gone back to basics with a cleaner, crisper version of the OG character design by series creator and writer Craig McCracken.

McCracken originally developed the Powerpuff Girls while he was still in college, making a short titled Whoopass Stew! when he was a student at CalArts.

The show first went to air in 1998, becoming a massive hit for the Cartoon Network with films, merchandise and a full six seasons with the last episode airing in 2005.

Touted as proto-feminist icons for their blend of girl power, guts and friendship, the Chemical X-enhanced trio of Blossom, Buttercup and Bubbles have become pop culture icons.

Cartoon Network announced that the series would be officially rebooted back in 2015, with the first episode - Don't Call Me A Princess - set to debut on March 28.
