The stats on Aus Post's delivery drone

Australia Post has trialled a drone delivery flight for the first time in Melbourne but says the project is a "very long-term innovation".

PACKAGES FLOWN TO YOUR DOORSTEP?

WHEN

* delivery system many years away, even if trials are successful

* trials happening with two drones in Melbourne over next fortnight

* 50 Victorian households part of a trial by late 2016, pending approval from regulator

PROTOTYPE

* designed by Melbourne startup ARI Labs

* holds packages of up to 1.2kg

* short flights of 15-20 minutes (approximately 15km) at altitude of 105 metres.

SAFETY

* regulator controls drone use and has approved Australia Post's first trial

* drone has an HD camera and a siren, parachute and lights

* customers opt-in for delivery, so drones won't fly over people sunbaking in backyards
