Stephen Hawking biopic The Theory of Everything has kicked off the prizes at the British Academy Film Awards, winning the trophy for best British film.

The story of the physicist whose mind probed the cosmos while his body was wracked by motor neurone disease has 10 nominations, with Eddie Redmayne tipped to take the acting prize for his performance as Hawking.

The Grand Budapest Hotel, Birdman and Boyhood are among other leading contenders for Sunday's awards, considered an indicator of likely success at Hollywood's Academy Awards later this month.
