Theatre-goers are getting the chance to be immersed in an underwater world at the Sydney Opera House.

'Kursk'takes the audience into a British spy submarine, and through the final moments of the ill-fated Russian sub.

It's a fictional tale built around a very real event in 2000.

Audiences can move around during the play, effectively becoming part of the action.

"We're giving them, in a way, a sort of filmic experience as well as a theatrical experience. Because they can wander around, they can find their own shot, their own camera angle", director Dan Jones told SBS.

The 360- degree set is built to exact specifications, and one of the actors is a former submariner and radio controller.

"In the show, when I'm diving the submarine, I feel like I'm back 30 years ago the first time I actually dived on a submarine. It's completely authentic", actor Ian Ashpitel said.
