There's time to turn polls around: Dutton

Liberal frontbencher Peter Dutton agrees with the prime minister the government has time to turn around opinion polls before the 2019 election.

"With two years to go, we have the ability to turn the polls around to win the election well under Malcolm Turnbull," Mr Dutton, who is considered a future Liberal leader by some, told Sky News on Sunday.

"I think Bill Shorten, as each day goes by, people's doubts about him grow."

When Mr Turnbull rolled Tony Abbott, he cited 30 consecutive Newspolls being in favour of the Labor party - it presently stands at 10 under his leadership.

Last week's Newspoll showed the coalition trailing Labor by 53 to 47 per cent in two-party terms.

Mr Turnbull said after that poll there is still "a lot of water to go under the bridge".

"The critical thing is to keep on delivering," he said.

Mr Dutton noted in January 2001 former Liberal prime minister John Howard was "gone for all money" and Labor's Kim Beazley was going to be prime minister but 10 months later the coalition won a significant majority.

Also in 2004, Mr Howard was way behind opposition leader Mark Latham but he again beat Labor in the election.
