Think tank warns of $50bn subs blowout

A think tank that advises government on defence has warned local builds risk blowouts in cost and timeframes

Defence experts are warning of potential cost and construction blowouts in a $50 billion plan to build a new fleet of submarines in Australia.

The Australian Strategic Policy Institute, a think tank set up by the federal government to advise on defence issues, is arguing local production correlates with higher production costs and schedule delays.

The comments are included in its review of the defence budget to be released on Thursday.
