Authorities have intercepted a boat carrying 64 suspected asylum seekers north of Ashmore Islands.

Customs vessel ACV Triton, operating under the control of Border Protection Command, intercepted the boat on Sunday night.

Earlier two boatloads of suspected asylum seekers were intercepted near Christmas Island.

One was carrying 103 passengers and two crew and the other had 138 people on board.

The vessels were intercepted by HMAS Wollongong on Sunday after a maritime patrol plane spotted the boats.
