Third ball works a charm for Lyon at MCG

Nathan Lyon had an immediate impact in the Boxing Day Test, claiming the first Pakistan wicket.

Australian cricket cult hero Nathan Lyon wrecked a planned tribute from his fans - and they could not have been happier.

An online campaign had organised for a mass chant of "Niiiice Garry" when Lyon bowled his third delivery in the Boxing Day Test.

As it turned out, the fans at the MCG celebrated a wicket instead.

Captain Steve Smith decided to bowl Lyon in the first hour and it proved a tactical masterstroke.

Lyon's third ball was a beauty, with Sami Aslam edging to Smith at first slip for a regulation catch.

It left Pakistan in early trouble at 1-18 after winning the toss.

Lyon's nickname is Garry, after the well-known AFL commentator, and fans have picked up through the stump microphone as Australian wicketkeeper Matthew Wade compliments deliveries with "Niiiice Garry".

The planned crowd chant was jokingly billed as a world record attempt.

"Gaz has ruined that for everyone, really," Australian paceman Jackson Bird said.

"It was nice to see him get a wicket - it was actually pretty funny.

"It was pretty loud, everyone was on their feet as he was running in.

"Then it was a beautiful delivery, really ... it's good to see the crowd getting behind Gazza."

The wicket was just what Lyon needed.

He was also embraced by the Gabba faithful during the first Test against Pakistan but delivered another lacklustre bowling performance, finishing with figures of 0-31 and 2-108.

The offspinner has been unable to find his best form for most of the year, including Australia's disastrous tour of Sri Lanka, and was almost dropped in favour of uncapped quick Chadd Sayers for the Brisbane Test.

Smith's apparent reluctance to throw Lyon the ball in Brisbane also raised eyebrows, especially with a tour of India on the horizon.

Asked prior to to the match whether Lyon was likely to bowl more often in Melbourne, Smith gave no assurances.

But he said the conditions at the MCG should be ripe for Lyon to return to his best, with the 29-year-old to benefit from a return to the red ball and what was expected to be a spin-friendly pitch.
