Third lay day at Portugal women's surfing

Organisers have been forced to call a third straight lay day at the Cascais World Surf League Women's Pro in Portugal.

Another day of small surf at the main site of Carcavelos and unfavourable winds forced organisers to call a third straight lay day on Thursday at stop No.8 on the World Surf League (WSL) championship tour, the Cascais Women's Pro in Portugal.

The opening stop of this year's European leg will resume the hotly contested fight for the women's world title as well as a dramatic race to requalify for the tour in 2015.

Officials say the event will start when conditions improve.

"The waves are still not here and we're thinking that it's going to be better around the corner at (back-up site) Guincho," said WSL deputy commissioner Jessi Miley-Dyer. "So we're going to be off for today and shifting our site all the way around for a call same time tomorrow at Guincho.

"It's a very special event with many great waves so we're lucky to have the different options."

Among the Australian women in first-round action, when the event finally gets under way, will be Sally Fitzgibbons, Laura Enever, Nikki Van Dijk, Tyler Wright and Dimity Stoyle.
