Thirteen dead after Texas church bus crash

Federal authorities are investigating after a pick-up truck collided with a church van carrying senior citizens, leaving at least 13 people dead.

At least 13 people are dead after a Texas church van carrying senior citizens collided head-on with a pick-up truck.

The bus had 14 aboard when the crash happened on Wednesday afternoon about 130km west of San Antonio.

Twelve occupants, including the bus driver, died at the scene, Texas Department of Public Safety Lieutenant Johnny Hernandez said.

Another passenger died in hospital and the lone bus survivor remains in a critical condition.

The pick-up truck driver is in a stable condition.

The National Transportation Safety Board sent investigators to the scene to begin seeking the cause of the crash.

The 14 people in the bus were senior members of the First Baptist Church of New Braunfels, Texas.

They were returning from a three-day retreat when the accident happened, the church said on its Facebook page.

"Thank you for the outpouring of love and support. Please continue to pray," it said.

Texas Governor Greg Abbott and his wife extended their condolences to the victims.

"We are saddened by the loss of life and our hearts go out to all those affected," he said in a statement.
