Customs officials are warning Australians not to be fooled by online sellers after thousands of steroids from Thailand were seized at a mail centre in Sydney.

Officers at the NSW International Mail Centre intercepted and X-rayed a suspicious looking package last week.

Inside they found 4000 blue heart-shaped tablets concealed in mislabelled supplement bottles.

Initial testing of the tablets returned a positive result for steroids.

Customs and Border Protection national manager of Cargo Operations Jagtej Singh said some websites were using false advertising to sell performance and image enhancing drugs (PIEDs).

"Despite the claims of some websites, the importation of performance and image enhancing drugs is prohibited without a permit," he said in a statement on Tuesday.

No one has been charged for importing the tablets but investigations continue.

People convicted of importing PIEDs face maximum fines of $170,000 and five years jail.
