Families that have pre-booked a snow holiday at Thredbo ski slopes are not happy about missing out on tobogganing fun this season after NSW Alpine resort decided to ban the family-friendly pastime.

Less than two weeks from the opening of the ski season, Thredbo ski resort released a statement on its website, preventing the use of toboggans and snow sliding equipment, citing safety concerns.

"Collisions with other sleds, vehicles, skiers, snowboarders, loss of control and falling off are among the safety concerns cited behind the resort's decision to ban tobogganing."

The decision is to "maximise safety for guests, employees, and resort property," the statement read.

"Thredbo prohibits the use of toboggans and other miscellaneous snow sliding equipment that is associated with "Snow Play" within our leasehold area".
The decision has sparked an angry backlash on social media from families that have already booked accommodation at the resort.

"Booked flights! Booked accommodation at Thredbo! How do I now explain to my four-year-old granddaughter that she can't toboggan this year," Kylie Wright wrote on Facebook.
Tobogganing has the green light at other nearby ski resorts including Mt Perisher, in strictly designated areas, and also further south at Mt Buller and Mt Stirling in Victoria.

AAP has contacted Thredbo for further comment.
