Three dead in crash, boy fights for life

Three people are dead and two more, including a four-year-old boy, have been seriously injured after two cars collided on the Brand Highway, north of Perth.

A four-year-old boy is fighting for life and a 19-year-old woman has also been seriously injured after a crash that killed three other people and destroyed two families in Western Australia.

Two cars collided head-on along the Brand Highway in Bonniefield, about 360km north of Perth, just after midday on Wednesday.

A 72-year-old man driving one vehicle and a 49-year-old woman driving the other died at the scene, while the man's 41-year-old female passenger died later at Geraldton Regional Hospital.

The boy was travelling with the man, while the 19-year-old woman was travelling with the 49-year-old woman.

Detective Senior Sergeant Steve Potter said police were still working to notify the next of kin but believed the occupants of each car were families.

Police are investigating whether a tyre blowout on the man's car caused it to veer into the path of the other vehicle.

Det Sen Sgt Potter said that was the suggestion of witnesses and if true was "highly unlucky, very tragic" that there was a car in the vicinity when it happened.

Several people, including a nurse and locals, stopped to help and they have been offered counselling because of the tragic scene they witnessed.

"What they've done to help the people in that situation, it's a great thing to see," Det Sen Sgt Potter said.

"We encourage people to do it if they can but we like to support people when they do as well."

Det Sen Sgt Potter said although the circumstances were not yet known, there was a general road safety message to get across.

"Drive within the limits of yourself and your vehicle on roads and be aware of what's happening around you," he said.

Police are examining the vehicles, the way they were driven and the road.

Anyone with information, including dashcam footage, is asked to contact Crime Stoppers.
