Three held over Bangladesh tailor killing

Three men have been arrested in Bangladesh after a Hindu tailor was dragged from his shop and hacked him to death.

Investigators in Bangladesh have arrested three people, including a teacher at a religious school, suspected of stabbing a Hindu man to death.

The teacher, Amnul Islam, had filed a case against Nikhil Chandra Joardar, who was hacked to death in an attack claimed by Islamic State militants on Saturday, over alleged comments against Islam and the prophet Mohammed, police officer Abdul Jalil said.

A local leader of Bangladesh's largest Islamic party, Jamaat-e-Islami, was also among the suspects, he added.

"The suspects are being interrogated," Jalil said, adding that a murder case had been lodged with the local police accusing three unnamed individuals.

On Saturday, three assailants arrived on a motorbike, dragged the 50-year-old tailor Joardar from his shop and stabbed him in the head and neck before fleeing the scene in the Gopalpur sub-district of Tangail.

Joardar had been arrested in 2012 after the school teacher accused him of making derogatory remarks about Islam and the prophet Mohammed.

He was released 24 days later and the case was withdrawn.

The Islamic State extremist group, which controls large swathes of Iraq and Syria, reportedly claimed responsibility.

The US-based SITE Intelligence Group said on Twitter that the Islamic State had murdered Joardar for undermining Islam and its prophet.
