A young man is dead and at least three others are injured after a series of stabbings in Sydney.
The 20-year-old died in Westmead Hospital after he was found critically wounded near Parramatta Station following the most recent of the attacks about 5am on Saturday, police say.
Three males aged 16, 17 and 19 remain in custody after being arrested in a nearby street.
Superintendent Julie Boon said the death is believed to be linked to an altercation at Prince Albert Square which occurred about half an hour before the man was found gravely injured.
"Police are looking into the relationship between the parties, whether they knew each other or not. At this stage, that's unknown," she told reporters in Sydney.
The death came hours after three other knife attacks in Sydney's west and lower north shore.
Gavin Pallister, 29, is accused of approaching a 66-year-old man at Merrylands on Friday afternoon and stabbing him in the chest before demanding his car keys and partially lacerating his ear.
Police allege the victim grabbed his knife as he tried to stab him a third time, causing a severe laceration to his hand and completely severing a tendon.
Pallister was later arrested but not before he allegedly stole a car at another address and tried to sell it.
He told police he'd been "hitting the drugs hard" after his release on parole the previous week, according to a statement of facts tendered to Parramatta Local Court on Saturday.
Pallister, who's been charged with attempted murder, armed robbery with wounding, stealing a motor vehicle and malicious damage, was refused bail.
He told magistrate George Zdenkowski he wanted to be released so he could get some sleep and find the right legal representation. He added that he would return to police for interviews if needed.
Pallister also sought information on the health of his alleged victim but it wasn't available in court.
In the other Friday incidents, police say a 48-year-old man was stabbed in the arm at Lane Cove West.
They say a 41-year-old man was also wounded during an attempted robbery at his Lakemba home by a man who'd claimed interest in buying a mobile phone. No arrests have been made.
