A man is in a serious condition after he was stabbed in the back at Ipswich, west of Brisbane.

The 29-year-old suffered multiple injuries during an argument at an apartment on Clifton Street around noon on Monday.

Police said his alleged attacker, a 40-year-old man, suffered head injuries while a 32-year-old woman who tried to intervene was cut on the hand.

The younger man was taken to Brisbane's PA Hospital in a serious condition, a Queensland Ambulance Service spokeswoman said.

The two others were taken to the Ipswich Hospital, both in a stable condition.
