A man has been taken to hospital with chest pains after three luxury cruisers were destroyed by fire in Sydney's inner west.

Witnesses told police they heard a loud explosion at Cabarita Road wharf shortly before 3am (AEDT) on Tuesday and saw a small vessel with an outboard motor leaving the area shortly afterwards.

Emergency crews attempted to douse the blaze, but it had already destroyed three luxury vessels and possibly damaged others by the time they arrived.

Fire and Rescue NSW told AAP one man was taken to hospital suffering chest pains.

Media reports say a family - two adults and three children - escaped the blaze.

Police are appealing for witnesses.
