Thunder down Perth in WBBL semi-final

Sydney Thunder advanced to the final of the women's Big Bash League with an eight-run win against Perth Scorchers in Thursday's semi-final.

Quick bowler Rene Farrell produced an ice-cool final over to help Sydney Thunder down Perth Scorchers by eight runs in Thursday's Women's Big Bash League semi-final.

The Thunder booked their spot in the final with Farrell's heroics decisive in defending their score of 6-118 in the Adelaide Oval encounter.

With Perth needing 14 runs from the last over, Farrell took wickets with the last two balls to restrict the Scorchers to 9-110.

In the final, the Thunder will play the winner of Friday's MCG semi-final between Hobart Hurricanes and Sydney Sixers.

Farrell finished with standout figures of 3-20 from her four overs and Nicola Carey (2-27) and Maisy Gibson (2-26) also claimed multiple wickets.

Their feats never allowed Perth's run chase to gain any serious traction, with top-scorer Elyse Villani (23) the only Scorcher batter to reach 20.

England's Charlotte Edwards made 18, as did Katherine Brunt, who was one of Farrell's final-over victims.

Earlier, the Thunder, who topped the table at the end of the preliminary rounds, also found scoring difficult.

Experienced Alex Blackwell was their mainstay, making 39 from 41 balls until she was run out on the last ball of the innings.

Blackwell's teammates Stafanie Taylor (24) and Carey (19) made handy contributions against a Perth bowling attack led by Heather Graham (2-15 from three overs) and featuring a tight four-over spell from Katie Hartshorn (0-19).
