Tasmanian quick Sam Rainbird will fill the last spot on the Sydney Thunder's roster after the left-armer was lured north from the Hobart Hurricanes.

The 26-year-old will be one of six new faces in the now complete Thunder squad this summer, headlined by England captain Joe Root and allrounder Chris Jordan.

Rainbird has played just seven games since debuting for the Hurricanes in 2015-16, but his more impressive first class record includes 123 wickets in 42 matches.

"We had one left-arm bowling option in our group in Daniel Sams and I wanted a good quality back-up," Thunder coach Shane Bond said.

"Sam's been around a long time on the first-class scene, he's got a good record, he's durable, he's used to the travel and he's a good team man.

"I think all those things contribute to him being a valuable team member."

The completion of their roster comes just four weeks out from their tournament-opener against the Melbourne Stars, before the Sydney Smash against the Sixers on Christmas Eve,

The Thunder are aiming to reach just their second finals series, after ending up sixth last season.

"It's a bit of a change, I haven't played any cricket outside of Tasmania or the Hurricanes in my career," Rainbird said.

"But there haven't been many opportunities there for me in the last couple of years so looking forward to a change and playing with the Thunder this year."

Sydney Thunder BBL squad: Shane Watson (capt), Fawad Ahmed, Jos Buttler, Pat Cummins, Anton Devcich, Callum Ferguson, Ryan Gibson, Chris Green, Liam Hatcher, Chris Jordan, Usman Khawaja, Jay Lenton, Nathan McAndrew, Arjun Nair, Kurtis Patterson, Sam Rainbird, Daniel Sams, Gurinder Sandhu, Jason Sangha and Joe Root.
