Thunderstorm hits Brisbane CBD

The Bureau of Meteorology has issued a storm warning for southeast Queensland with damaging winds expected to hit around 3.30pm on Thursday afternoon.

A severe thunderstorm with damaging winds has rushed through Brisbane's CBD and the city's surrounding areas.

Wind gusts of almost 100km/h, heavy rain and lightning hit the CDB as the rapid east-moving storm swept through Queensland's southeast, according to the Bureau of Meteorology.

Bureau forecaster Sam Campbell said the super cell storm rapidly intensified in Brisbane after 4pm on Thursday, following an earlier storm west of Ipswich.

The storm has caused havoc on Brisbane's roads and also forced rail travellers off train platforms at South Brisbane.

Energex says more than 5000 homes are without power in southeast Queensland on Thursday evening, including more than 3000 in Brisbane.

"More than 30 wires down across our network," the electricity company tweeted.

Brisbane Airport has warned flights in and out of city may be delayed or cancelled due to the storms.
