Rain is on the way for drought-stricken farmers in southern Queensland, with the most significant showers in six months expected to fall at the weekend.
While the thunderstorms will not break the drought, the Bureau of Meteorology says they will be a welcome relief after a prolonged dry spell.
"For most areas that are likely to be affected, the last time they would have seen rainfall of more than 10mm in a day would be back in April," meteorologist Janine Yuasa told AAP on Friday.
"Closer to the coast, Toowoomba and the Sunshine Coast and similar areas have had a few rain days and received 10mm or so between April and now, but places further west of the Great Divide haven't seen much of anything at all."
Showers and thunderstorms are expected to fall south of Emerald and east of Charleville on Saturday.
"The most likely areas are down through the Roma, St George and Goondiwindi areas with rainfalls up to 30 or 40mm, with the risk of higher rainfalls with any thunderstorms," Ms Yuasa said.
The southeast, including Brisbane, the Gold Coast, Toowoomba, the Sunshine Coast and Gympie, should receive falls on Sunday, but they are expected to be slightly lighter.
"Broadly, we are talking about five to 30mm on Sunday morning with showers and thunderstorms and maybe turning to rain at times," she said.
The rain and thunderstorms are being pushed by a trough system from the west.
Light showers might also fall around the Mackay area through to Townsville.
