The deadline for Balmain to repay the $5.4 million they owe the NRL to avoid forfeiting their half share in Wests Tigers has been extended until April 30.
Negotiations on the restructure of the joint venture were "constructive" and "continuing", the NRL said in a statement issued on Thursday evening.
The reprieve follows billionaire developer Harry Triguboff's decision not to buy out Balmain's debt.
The former foundation club was reportedly desperate for Triguboff to absorb their stake in the NRL entity but the long-time sponsor through Meriton Apartments says he's not interested in doing so.
Balmain are $11 million in debt as a result of their closed leagues club in Rozelle, with the abandoned site the subject of a dispute between developers and local residents in the Land and Environment Court.

They initially had to cough up the $5.4 million they borrowed from the NRL by Thursday or risk losing complete control of the club to NRL partners, the Western Suburbs Magpies.
