Tigers rookie curbs Bulls at Gabba

Tasmanian quick Andrew Perrin has made an impressive start to his Sheffield Shield career in the Gabba clash against Queensland.

Little known Tasmanian speedster Andrew Perrin didn't waste time making a name for himself in the Sheffield Shield clash with Queensland at the Gabba on Wednesday.

On Shield debut, Perrin snared 3-48 - including the prized scalp of ex-Test opener Joe Burns for 83 - as the Bulls moved to 6-251 by stumps on day one.

The unheralded 26-year-old had big shoes to fill after slotting into the attack in the absence of Test quick Jackson Bird, who is preparing for Australia's tour of India.

Besides his new teammates and opposition, there was another huge unknown for Perrin - the ball.

The Shield round marks the debut of the English Dukes ball, replacing usual manufacturers Kookaburra for the last half of the competition.

Yet Perrin thrived on the Gabba deck to ensure honours were shared by stumps on day one.

It was a rousing Shield start for Perrin who only earned a Tasmania contract this season after impressing in Victoria's premier grade cricket.

Perrin dismissed Burns just before the tea break, ending a 127-run third wicket stand with Marnus Labuschagne (60).

He also claimed Jack Wildermuth (eight) and the key wicket of Sam Truloff (41) just before stumps.

It helped reel in Queensland who were at one stage cruising at 2-156.

"It is difficult to face a bowler you haven't faced before but there would have been more pressure on the debutant, but I thought he did quite well," Burns said of Perrin.

"He had good energy on the ball. It felt like he was always close to creating an opportunity - full credit to him."

Cricket Australia have introduced the Dukes ball in preparation for the 2019 Ashes tour.

Australia have lost the past four Ashes tours of England where the Dukes ball is used.

Burns said the new Dukes ball did not offer too many surprises.

"With the Dukes ball, if you bat well you will get runs and if you bowl well you will get wickets," he said.

"With the the harder wickets in Australia it (Dukes ball) will swing but fly through a bit faster than in England."

Bulls skipper Chris Hartley was 31 not out at stumps after returning from a broken finger that sidelined him for the Big Bash League.

The Queensland gloveman is just two victims away from breaking Darren Berry's record of 546 Shield wicket-keeper dismissals.

Queensland were 2-72 at lunch and 4-160 at tea after winning the toss.
