Now they've put their AFL season back on track, St Kilda's next test is at another level.
Saturday night's clash with Richmond at Etihad Stadium is already a major game for the two clubs, given it is a fundraiser for the Maddie's Vision charity.
Maddie Riewoldt, the younger sister of Saints veteran Nick and cousin of Tigers star Jack, died two years ago of a rare bone disorder.
But in terms of the Saints' finals aspirations, it is massive.
Three-straight wins have put St Kilda a game clear in eighth spot.
Fourth-placed Richmond are going even better and have come off last week's first-class win over the Power at Adelaide Oval.
Ninth-placed Sydney are snapping at the heels as the AFL's form team and in six games this season against sides currently in the top eight, St Kilda have only won once.
"We know we need to be at our best to be in the game, to give ourselves an opportunity to win," said St Kilda coach Alan Richardson.
"It's a real test for us, given we've been able to perform strongly now for three weeks.
"But they (Richmond) are at a different level in terms of their form."
It is notable that despite coming off three wins in a row, St Kilda made two unforced changes.
While Jimmy Webster is suspended, Luke Dunstan was left out because the Saints thought they would have one too many midfielders.
Daniel McKenzie can play across half-back and offers more flexibility.
Maverick Weller is out of form and Ben Long was recalled for his third senior game.
Richardson said they backed their onballers to go up a strong Richmond midfield led by Dustin Martin, Trent Cotchin and Dion Prestia.
"We'll go with the guys who have been pretty good for us in there - we think Seb (Ross), Koby (Stevens), Jack Steven, Jack Steele have a real balance to their midfield play," Richardson said.
"They're a pretty accountable group.
"We think at the right time they can get forward."
Key defender Jake Carlisle will play his 100th match, a week after he drifted forward and kicked two goals in the win over Fremantle.
"He has some real offence to his defence," Richardson said.
