Tight losses leave Pies behind their goals

Collingwood expect to get some key players back from injury after their bye week in the AFL.

Coach Nathan Buckley insists Collingwood are among the most consistent teams in the AFL.

The Magpies head into their bye week in 11th spot on the ladder, but would have been as high as sixth had they found a way past Melbourne in a Queen's Birthday thriller.

Instead it was the Demons who moved into the top eight after overcoming a 28-point deficit in the second quarter to claim a famous 15.14 (104) to 15.10 (100) victory.

Collingwood's only two losses in the past five rounds have both been by less than a goal, to GWS and now Melbourne.

"We have used 29 or 30 players over the last seven weeks and it doesn't matter who is in or who's out, we've been as consistent as anyone," said Buckley.

"Our fans should expect they're going to get a consistent effort from our boys."

After their bye week, Collingwood must regroup ahead of a huge match against fellow finals aspirants Port Adelaide, at the MCG, on June 24.

The Magpies hope to be strengthened by the return of key defender Ben Reid and wingman Travis Varcoe from injury.

But it's unclear how long clever forward Jamie Elliott will be sidelined by the ankle injury suffered in the round-11 win over Fremantle.

We really set ourselves to get to six and six (wins and losses) by the break but it's not to be and we're five and seven," said Buckley.

"We'll rest up, regenerate over this next period.

"We've got Port Adelaide on the other side of the bye in a couple of weeks' time so we will reinforce the things we've done well, look at areas of improvement and keep adding to the style of game that we think is going to be pretty competitive."
