Time has named the medical professionals treating people with the deadly Ebola virus as the magazine's "Person of the Year."

In an editorial published today, Time editor Nancy Gibbs said the medics on the front lines of the Ebola epidemic in west Africa were heroes.

"The rest of the world can sleep at night because a group of men and women are willing to stand and fight," she wrote.

"For tireless acts of courage and mercy, for buying the world time to boost its defenses, for risking, for persisting, for sacrificing and saving, the Ebola fighters are TIME’s 2014 Person of the Year."

Each year, Time honours a person, group or concept that has "has done the most to influence the events of the year".

Runners up this year included the Ferguson protesters and Russian President Vladimir Putin.
