Time running out to enrol in election

Voters have until 8pm (AEST) on Monday to register their details with the Australian Electoral Commission to vote in September's federal election.

Labor hopes for debate poll bounce

Labor hopes the upcoming election debate will boost their campaign momentum.

Australians have just hours to make sure their name is on the electoral roll or miss out on casting their vote in the fast-approaching federal election.

Voters have until 8pm (AEST) on Monday to register their details with the Australian Electoral Commission (AEC).

It's now too late to post an enrolment form, but the AEC says the quickest and easiest way to enrol is online where applications are processed electronically.

You can also fax, scan, or drop off the form in person to any AEC office before 8pm.

Those who have moved house since last voting are also encouraged to check their details online to make sure they're up to date.

All Australian citizens aged 18 years or over are required by law to vote, with a fine being issued to those who do not.

The AEC fears a potential record three million Australians either won't vote or will cast an informal vote this election.

Spokesman Phil Diak said there were 14.6 million on the roll at the weekend, out of a total pool of 15.9 million.

He said 900,000 didn't vote last federal election while some 700,000 spoiled their ballot papers to cast an informal vote.

"This all adds up, the unenrolled, not turning out, spoiling their ballot papers to something like three million. That is broadly around one in five eligible electors across the country," he told ABC radio.

Mr Diak said there had been about 80,000 enrolments since the election was called.
