Landlady Sharon McCulloch fought hard to save her Kinglake pub from the Black Saturday bushfires, but a year on, she's preparing to leave it behind.

She and her husband battled with buckets and hoses to protect the National Park Hotel, as locals sheltered inside.

In the months after the devastating blaze, which left dozens of Kinglake residents dead, the couple worked to restore the bar.

But as the anniversary of the fires approaches, she and her family say the time is right to leave the bushfire-hit community.
