Timeline of Bali Nine arrests

The AFP has detailed its actions ahead of the arrests of the Bali Nine in Indonesia that led to the ringleaders' death by firing squad.

AFP'S ACTIONS AHEAD OF THE 2005 BALI NINE ARRESTS

February - The AFP begins investigations into the so-called Bali Nine and identifies three people of interest Andrew Chan, Renae Lawrence and Matthew Norman.

March - AFP still to identify syndicate hierarchy, the identity of the majority of the syndicate members, the source of the drugs or even the type that might have been imported.

April 3 - Andrew Chan departs for Bali.

April 6 - Renae Lawrence, Matthew Norman, Martin Stephens and Si Yi Chen depart for Bali. (Stephens and Chen become linked to syndicate because of analysis of travel bookings.) AFP at this time completely unaware of Myuran Sukumaran's involvement.

April 7 - AFP counter-terrorism unit receives phone a call from a lawyer acting on behalf of Scott Rush's father, Lee Rush, and shortly afterwards receives call from his father. A travel alert is placed on Scott Rush.

April 8 - Scott Rush triggers travel alert when he checks in at customs. The AFP sends letter to counterparts in Indonesia providing details about the heroin smuggling plot and advising to "take what action they deem appropriate".

April 9 - Indonesian police places Bali Nine syndicate under constant surveillance after receiving information from the AFP about the group, including names and passport numbers.

April 17 - Bali Nine members Michael Czugaj, Scott Rush, Martin Stephens and Renae Lawrence arrested at airport in Bali. Andrew Chan is removed from flight about to depart for Australia. Tan Duc Thanh Nguyen, Myuran Sukumaran, Si Yi Chen and Matthew Norman arrested at Melasti Beach Bungalows near Kuta.
